Jerusalem is associated with many things internationally - from its religious sites to the ongoing conflict here - but it's safe to say that Ethiopian food probably isn't one of them.
Thankfully, the city is blessed with an abundance of excellent, authentic Ethiopian restaurants thanks to the influx of Ethiopian Jews to Israel.
My personal favorite among the options (I think I've tried them all!) is Habesh located on a small side street betweeen Agripas and Yafo in downtown Jerusalem. Once barely known outside the local Ethiopian community, it's since become a popular tourist site among visitors. Many have had their first taste of Ethiopian's amazing cuisine in this small establishment.
Like most Ethiopian restaurants in the city, Habesh likes to keep its menu simple. It serves a mixed assortment of vegan pulse-based dishes (bayenetu) served on fermented teff bread (injera) as well as tibbs (meat). Proprietess Sara is extremely friendly and always happy to provide a runthrough - in Hebrew or Amharic - about what's good and worth trying.
There's also excellent bunna coffee and - now and again - fermented honey (tej) as well as a selection of imported Ethiopian beer alongside more widely-known local classics like Goldstar.
Habesh - 5 Masiyah Barukhoff St (between Yafo and Agripas). Kashrut / kosher supervision: none.
